Total Footprint

7.01 tonnes CO2/year

BP Carbon Foot Print Calculator

14.3 tonnes C02 per year- This is lower than the Canadian average of 16.0
average energy use- 48160 kWh/yr

56% Personal Travel
7% Waste
37% House Hold Energy

Canada produces a total of 747 million tonnes per year Canadians produce approximately 24 tonnes of carbon dioxide individually.

one tonne of C02 emmisions occupies 556m3 of space at 25 degrees C and standard pressure. The volume of water in an olymipic swimming pool is approx. 2500m3. Therefore, the average household C02 emissions in the UK ( approx. 10 tonnes per year) would be enough to fill about two olympic swimming pools and the average household emissions in the USA ( approx. 20 tonnes per year) would be enough to fill about four and a half Olympic swimming pools!

US
one US gallon of gasoline contains approximately 35 kWh of energy
one US gallon of diesel contains approximately 41 kWh of energy

International
one litre of petrol contains approx. 9kWh of energy

one litre of diesel contains approx 11 kWh of energy
You can determine approx how much fuel your car uses in a year by didviding the energy results for each car by the appropriate conversion factor ( above )

Introduction

A carbon footprint measures the impact of our daily lives on the environment, particularly climate change. The carbon footprint is a measurment of the greenhouse gases we produce and is measures in tonnes of carbon dioxide. One tonne of C02 emmisions occupies 556m3 of space at 25 degrees C and standard pressure. The volume of water in an Olympic swimming pool is approx. Canada produces a total of 747 million tonnes of carbon dioxide each year. If everyone lived like we do in Canada, we would need 4.2 Earths to support all of our lifestyles. How is this fair? This means that most people do not live as well as we do, and we are extremely wasteful. This also makes climate change largely our fault and now our problem for which a solution is needed. Canadians need to come together and agree to do our part to reduce our use of resources and reduce our carbon emissions. My carbon footprint is 10.6 tonnes of C02 per year, while the Canadian average is 8.2 tonnes of C02 per year. Knowing your carbon footprint is important because it gives you something to work on and it also makes you realize just how much of an impact you personally have on the environment. On a daily basis, we aren't necessarily thinking of what impact we are having on the environment. Knowing your carbon footprint gives you a realistic idea of what you can improve on.

Discussion

My carbon footprint was 10.6 tonnes of C02 per year, above the Canadian average of 8.2 tonnes of C02 per year. Most people in Canada live in cities where they do not have to travel long distances to go to school, get groceries, go shopping, etc. In rural Canada, driving is a neccesity, and most of us in Huron County depend on it for everyday life. In cities, there is public transit, which would help keep your carbon footprint lower. One thing that really made me think was just bad driving is for the environment. When I'm driving, im not thinking of the environment, but I really should be. Driving long distances for no reason is extremely wasteful, not to mention costly. 56% of my carbon footprint was due to personal travel. That is a large amount, and that is one area of concern that I can work to lower. Car pooling is an option, as well as making sure I try to think about how far a drive is. My household energy use was 37% of my overall carbon footprint. This can be lowered by me taking the time to turn off the electronics in my home. I do not turn off any of the computers in my home, and we do not un-plug any chargers. This energy is wasted for no reason, and if my family took the time, it would be very easy to fix. My waste output was worth 0.4% of my overall carbon footprint while the Canadian average is 0.9. My family composts, and we try not to buy products with lots of plastic packaging. Little things like that are easy to do, and greatly help reduce my carbon emmisions.

Methods Section

In my household, there are 4 people. We have an monthly electricity bill of $275. We use fluorescent light bulbs. We compost, and turn out lights when we leave the room. We own three vehicles, 2 Dodge Grand Caravans, and a Ford F150. My family does a lot of driving, about 20000 km each year. My house is on well water, so it was hard to accurately account for how much water we use. With a family of 4 that all shower, do laundry, and run the dishwasher daily, it is fairly safe to say that we use a large amount of water. We own a top loading washing machine, and a dryer. My home is heated by wood and oil. We recycle, eat out about once a week and also eat a lot of meat. We own a cottage, increasing the amount of traveling we do per year.

Abstract

Carbon footprints measure the amount of C02 individuals emit into the atmosphere per year. My carbon output was 10.6 tonnes of CO2 per year while the Canadian average is 8.2 tonnes of CO2 per year. Supporting my lifestyle requires 4.6 earths. My daily decisions require the support of 2.5 earths. My land footprint was 2 hectares per year while the average Canadain land footprint was 1.9 hectares of land per year. My average water usage was1694 cubic meters per year while the Canadian average is 1614.9. My tree footprint was 3.9 trees per year. The average Canadian tree footprint was 3.3. My carbon footprint was above the Canadian average.
